Why Does My Dog Lay on My Clothes?

My Dog is Laying on My Clothes!

Dogs like laying on clothes for various reasons including warmth, comfort and because the smell of their owner lingers on the clothes which dogs like. A dog’s sense of smell is excellent which means that they are able to pick up on even small details in scents. With this being said, if a dog smells his/her owner’s clothing they will often feel more comfortable and relaxed

Many owners choose to put an item of clothing with their scent on it in their dog’s bed so that they feel more comfortable sleeping there. It is also possible that if a dog lays on a piece of clothing, he/she believes that it’s theirs and it might be difficult to get them off of it.

Dogs often lay on dirty clothes, which has to do with the dog’s heightened sense of smell. When a dog picks up an interesting scent that they want to investigate further or simply wants to continue smelling it because it smells so good, they may lay their heads down right onto the shirt you just threw in the wash.

Many dogs will also take a much-loved toy and lay it right onto your clothes. Dogs often like to keep dirty things very close by and often times they prefer items that smell bad to humans vs the smell of laundry soap.

Laying down on clothing (and other objects) and sleeping there is completely normal behavior for dogs. It has nothing to do with dominance or submission; rather, it simply makes the dog feel more comfortable and safe. Some people believe that the dog does not want anyone else to sit on his bed but usually he will happily lay let you join him. Dogs are pack animals and like doing things together.

Dogs will also lay on items that have been used by another member of their pack, such as a family member or another pet in the house. For example, if your pet cat lays down somewhere, it is very likely that your dog will want to join them on the same spot!

When a dog feels safe and happy his tail wags from side to side; this means that your dog trusts you and loves you (and may even love your cat too!)

It’s important to know that dogs who lay on their owners clothing or other items are not trying to be aggressive or dominant. They simply enjoy doing it and might feel upset if you try to stop them from laying there.

How to Stop My Dog From Laying On My Clothes

Many dogs enjoy lying on the owner’s clothing because they either enjoy the scent of their owner or they simply see it as their ‘space’ because this is where they can get comfortable.

If you want to stop your dog from laying on your clothes, there are a few ways to go about it.

  1. The best way would be to make sure that the clothing he’s interested in does not have your scent on it anymore- if the item is dirty, put it in the washer.
  2. You can also put an item that smells like you in his bed so he stops trying to lay on your clothes.
  3. If all else fails, you can try squirting him with water if he tries to do it again- but be sure not to hit him in the face.

In this day and age, it’s important to consider that a dog who does not feel relaxed will be less likely to interact with other dogs or even people. If you’re having issues with your pet laying on your clothes or any other problem relating to behavior, talk to your veterinarian for more information.
